Match Report
By 'The Cat'

Victory over Australia!

We're playing the Ton-Loving Criminals I was told; a bunch of Antipodeans. Historically speaking this was slightly inexplicable as emigrants to New Zealand were all nicely brought up pillars of the community who had never stolen a loaf of bread in their lives!! However, upon meeting the said team I found that no-one was confusing their "tens" with their "tins" or their "sexes" with their "sixes"; they were all obviously from the penal colony; all was sound.

Amidst copious announcements that a cricket match (a description we have up till then aspired to) was being played on the green we got underway. The Criminals had instigated an interestingly, novel idea that once a batsmen had reached 30 runs they had to retire; no surprises then when upon winning the toss and batting the Slippery Swede was sent in to open the innings. He polished off his quota of 30 runs in an economical amount of overs and then retired for a rest and a fag and the possibility of another rapid 30 runs later in the innings!!

Tim held the innings together with a defiant 20 runs; perfecting the snick through slips for an energy-saving four runs. An immaculate captain's innings followed from Mr Wufferelli full of his trademark nurdles plus some lesser seen but no less impressive mighty swats to the boundary. None of the appreciative onlookers were safe including the ever present and supportive Roxie. Upon reaching 33 The Wuff had to adhere to the rules and retire allowing Lars to stride purposefully to the wicket once again. No bowler was respected as he and Sandeepa smacked the ball around the park allowing the Mighty Wanderers to reach a grand total of 221-8 off 35 overs. History was made as at the end of the innings three batsmen (Lars, Wuff & Sandeepa) were all not out!!

The Ton-Lovers began their innings defiantly with a few gusty blows of their own. However a cunning opening spell from the Chairman saw two quick wickets. A containing spell from Bryce and Sandeepa was followed by a brilliant, individual effort from the South African ringer Justin. The Ton-Lovers were obviously up for a bit of a laugh as they had handed over their most potent weapon to the Wanderers and he proceeded to rip through their batsmen ending with the stunning figures of 4 overs, no maidens (please try harder next time!), five wickets for seven runs!! An exceedingly worthy man of the match.

What a fine way for the Mighty Wanderers to end their season with an emphatic win by 112 runs. May the beheading continue.............
